Yokamachi Street, Nanto

Yokamachi Street, known locally as Yokamachi Dori, is the historic cobblestone thoroughfare in Inami, a district of Nanto City in western Toyama Prefecture. This street serves as the symbolic approach to Zuisen-ji Temple, which has stood for 600 years, and has evolved into Japan's premier woodcarving village, where the traditional craft remains a living, working tradition.

The origins of Inami's renowned woodcarving tradition date back to 1763, when Zuisen-ji Temple was destroyed by fire. To rebuild it, four master artisans were dispatched from Kyoto, including Sanshiro Maekawa, one of the finest woodcarvers of his era. These temple carpenters passed their techniques to local people, establishing the foundation for what would become Inami's signature craft. Today, approximately 200 carvers live and work in Inami, mainly concentrated along Yokamachi Dori, creating what amounts to an open-air museum with a population of just 8,000 residents, of whom around 150 work as woodcarvers.

Walking along the stone-paved street, visitors experience an immersive cultural landscape where dozens of woodcarving workshops line the route, with wood-carved signboards, monuments, and decorative figures visible throughout. The rhythmic tap of chisels punctuates the air as artisans work at their benches, and the aroma of fresh wood fills the cobbled street. The area features workshops, breweries, souvenir shops, and townhouses with traditional lattice doors that create a distinctly historic atmosphere. Visitors can browse carved products ranging from decorative items to functional pieces, observe craftsmen at work, and explore galleries and cafes housed in traditional buildings.

Yokamachi Street is accessible via bus from Takaoka Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line, taking the World Heritage Bus or Shogawa Komakientei Line for approximately 70 minutes to the Inami Chuo bus stop. The street itself is open to the public year-round with no admission fee, though individual workshops and attractions may have their own hours and charges. The area is best explored on foot, with Zuisen-ji Temple marking the upper terminus of the street.
