Yunoko Lake

4.5 (200)Natural FeatureEstablishment

Yunoko Lake is a tranquil mountain lake formed by volcanic activity. This small but scenic lake sits at an elevation of 1,478 meters and covers an area of about 0.35 square kilometers. The lake's name, Yunoko, translates to "hot water lake," hinting at the nearby hot springs that feed into it.

Yunoko Lake was formed around 20,000 years ago when Mount Nantai erupted, creating a natural dam. The lake’s waters are crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding mountains and forests. It's especially beautiful in autumn when the trees around the lake turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. The lake is famous for fishing, with species like rainbow trout and Japanese char in its waters.

At the northern end of the lake, you’ll find Yudaki Falls, where water cascades down 70 meters, adding to the area's natural charm. The peaceful environment around Yunoko Lake makes it a great spot for walking, with trails that offer stunning views of the lake and the surrounding landscape.

What other travelers are saying about Yunoko Lake

An exceptional destination, especially in the fall. We started our day with an early morning walk along the lake, beginning at the Kamenoi Hotel and heading counterclockwise. The woodland trails, full of moss and surrounded by birdsong, were breathtaking. We were delighted to encounter deer and monkeys on the trail, which was an unexpected and fun experience! As the mist lifted from the lake, it revealed a stunning, serene landscape—truly a core memory for us.

Definitely a visit when you come to Yumoto Onsen. As it is much further away from the touristy areas, there was very few people around and you can really enjoy the serenity of the place. For this reason, I prefer this to Lake Chuzenji.

This is the first time i came to Yunoko in summer. I was amazed by the beauty of this volcanic lake . You can hike around the lake about 70 minutes to enjoy the crystal clear green water and discover many big and small fishes . I will definitely coming back for koyo and hope to photograph sunset in the lake .

During my visit to Nikko on year end, I have been to this Lake as well. One of the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. At that time it was frozen and was able to walk over it. Place was so silent that if you throw any stone you can hear clear sound of it and stone can go far away due to ice. Nearby there was a nice restaurant and enjoyed local food there. In summer, for hiking also this lake is good place. Must go!!!
