Zakimi Castle Ruins, Yomitan

Zakimi Castle Ruins stands as one of Okinawa's most impressive examples of Ryukyuan gusuku architecture, located in Yomitan Village in central Okinawa. Built around 1416-1422 by the legendary military commander Gosamaru, the castle served as a strategic fortress to defend against potential invasions from the north. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu."

The castle's defining feature is its extraordinary stone walls, constructed using natural limestone fitted together without mortar in a technique that has withstood centuries of typhoons and earthquakes. The arch-shaped gate is considered one of the oldest in Okinawa and demonstrates the advanced engineering skills of the Ryukyuan people. Unlike many other castle ruins, Zakimi's walls remain largely intact, with some sections standing over 15 meters high. The castle originally consisted of two enclosures, though only the stone foundations survive today.

Visitors can walk along the castle walls and explore the remaining structures while enjoying panoramic views of the East China Sea and surrounding countryside. On clear days, the vantage point extends to Kerama Islands in the distance. The compact site can typically be explored in 30-45 minutes, making it accessible for travelers with limited time. Information boards throughout the grounds provide historical context in Japanese and English.

The ruins are located approximately 30 kilometers north of Naha. By car, the drive takes about 40 minutes via Route 58 or the Okinawa Expressway. Free parking is available at the site. Public transportation options are limited, though buses from Naha to Yomitan Village run several times daily, requiring a 15-minute walk from the nearest bus stop. Admission is free, and the grounds are open year-round.
