Zao Town in southern Miyagi Prefecture is renowned for its dramatic volcanic landscape and world-class winter sports facilities. Located approximately 330 kilometers north of Tokyo, this mountain resort destination sits at the foot of Mount Zao, an active volcano straddling the border between Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures. The town has developed into one of Japan's premier ski destinations since the establishment of organized winter sports facilities in the mid-20th century.
The area's most distinctive natural feature is the Okama Crater Lake, locally known as the "Five Color Pond" for its shifting emerald and turquoise hues caused by changing weather and sunlight conditions. This crater formed approximately 1,000 years ago and sits at an elevation of 1,600 meters. The volcanic activity that created Okama continues to shape the landscape, with numerous hot springs emerging throughout the region. These onsen have attracted visitors for centuries and remain integral to the local tourism economy.
Winter visitors come primarily for the Zao Onsen Ski Resort, which offers over 300 hectares of skiable terrain across multiple zones. The resort is particularly famous for its juhyo, or "snow monsters"—trees completely encased in frozen snow and ice that create otherworldly formations found in few places worldwide. These occur when strong winter winds from Siberia deposit moisture on subalpine fir trees, with optimal viewing typically between late January and early March. Night skiing operations allow visitors to see illuminated snow monsters, creating a surreal winter spectacle.
Beyond winter activities, the Zao mountain range provides extensive hiking trails during the warmer months. The trek to Okama Crater Lake takes approximately one hour from the Zao Echo Line summit parking area and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The Zao Echo Line and Zao High Line are seasonal toll roads that provide vehicular access to high-altitude viewpoints, generally open from late April through early November depending on snow conditions.
Zao Town is accessible by train and bus from major cities. Visitors can take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen to Shiroishi-Zao Station, then transfer to local buses that run to the ski resort and onsen areas, with the journey taking approximately 40 minutes. Alternatively, direct highway buses operate from Sendai Station, reaching Zao Onsen in about 90 minutes. Car rental is popular for accessing more remote trailheads and viewpoints.
