Cup Noodle Museum, Yokohama

The Cup Noodles Museum Yokohama, officially known as the CUPNOODLES MUSEUM, opened in September 2011 to commemorate the life and achievements of Momofuku Ando, the Taiwanese-Japanese inventor who created instant ramen in 1958. Ando founded Nissin Food Products and revolutionized global food culture by developing the first instant noodles under the brand Chikin Ramen, followed by Cup Noodles in 1971. The museum stands as a tribute to his innovative spirit and the impact of instant noodles on worldwide eating habits.

The facility explores the cultural significance of instant ramen as a Japanese innovation that addressed post-war food shortages and eventually became a global phenomenon. Through its exhibits, the museum emphasizes Ando's creative thinking and persistence, presenting instant noodles not merely as a food product but as a symbol of entrepreneurial ingenuity. The museum's design encourages visitors to appreciate how simple ideas can transform industries and daily life across continents.

Visitors can experience two primary interactive attractions. The My CUPNOODLES Factory allows guests to design their own custom Cup Noodles package and select from 4 soup flavors and 12 ingredient toppings, creating over 5,000 possible combinations. The Chicken Ramen Factory offers a hands-on workshop where participants make fresh instant noodles from scratch, kneading and stretching dough before flash-frying it. The museum also features the Instant Noodles History Cube, displaying over 800 instant noodle packages from around the world, and the Momofuku Ando Theater, which presents his life story through multimedia exhibits.

The museum is located in Minato Mirai 21, Yokohama's modern waterfront district, approximately 30 minutes from central Tokyo. Visitors can reach it via the Minatomirai Line to Minatomirai Station, with the museum a 7-minute walk from the station exit. Alternatively, take the JR Keihin-Tohoku or Negishi Line to Sakuragicho Station, followed by an 11-minute walk. Admission to the museum costs ¥500 for adults and is free for high school students and younger. The My CUPNOODLES Factory requires an additional ¥400, while the Chicken Ramen Factory costs ¥1,000 and requires advance reservation. The museum welcomes approximately 1 million visitors annually.
