Hakuba Cortina Ski Resort sits in the Hakuba Valley in Japan's Northern Alps, part of the extensive ski area network that hosted events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. The resort was developed as part of Japan's ski boom in the latter half of the 20th century and has since become one of the region's premier winter destinations. Located at the base of Mount Norikura, the resort benefits from the area's heavy snowfall patterns that have made the Hakuba Valley internationally renowned among winter sports enthusiasts.

The resort holds particular significance as part of Japan's powder snow culture, receiving some of the world's driest snow due to cold Siberian air masses picking up moisture from the Sea of Japan. The ski season typically runs from mid-December through early April, with peak conditions occurring between January and March when snowfall is heaviest and temperatures most stable. Outside winter months, the resort transforms into a hiking and mountain biking destination, with gondola operations continuing through the summer and autumn seasons for scenic mountain access and alpine flower viewing.

Hakuba Cortina is located 50 kilometers from Nagano City and 260 kilometers from Tokyo. Direct bus services operate from Tokyo's Shinjuku Station taking approximately 4.5 hours, while the combination of JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano Station followed by local bus service takes about 4 hours total. The resort provides shuttle services from Hakuba Station during ski season. Daily lift tickets cost 4,200 yen for adults and 3,400 yen for children, with multi-day passes and seasonal passes available. Equipment rental packages start at 3,500 yen per day for skis or snowboards with boots.
