Good place for fans of Ozu. He moved to this house in his later life and this Japanese old building is so fantastic that you can feel a nostalgic nice vibe here.
Japanese film director Ozu Yasujiro's cottage museum
Ozu Yasujiro, film director famous for movies like 'Tokyo Story' and 'Last Spring', owned a cottage in the highland resort of Tateshina where he spent the last years of his life. Both a studio and living space, after his death the cottage has been turned into a commemorative museum called Mugeiso. The cottage is built as a thatched-roof traditional farmhouse and is worth a visit even if you don't know Ozu.
Mainly open on weekends during the summer. Admission is free.
This refers to the mountain villa (located in Tateshina Pool-daira) that the legendary film director Yasujiro Ozu used as his workplace and a place to spend time with friends in his later years.
He deeply loved Tateshina, spent time at his villa, "Mugeiso," and apparently, his greatest pleasure in Tateshina was taking walks through the sparse woods of the area several times a day.
This is now known as "Ozu's Walking Path," and a walking trail of approximately 4 kilometers has been developed.
I visited the "Yasujiro Ozu Memorial Museum/Mugeiso," but unfortunately, it was closed that day.
There was a caretaker at the entrance, but unfortunately, he didn't have the key with him.
It seemed like he would let me see inside if he had the key.
The man was diligently picking ripe buds from a "Tara tree" in the garden, which looked to be over 2 meters tall.
While admiring the heartwarming sight, I asked, "May I just take a look at the exterior?" and was allowed to take my time.
In recent years, it's gotten quite hot in Tateshina during the summer, but air conditioning is probably unnecessary.
Even on a clear day, the shade is very pleasant with just a gentle breeze.
We also love Tateshina.
*Mugeiso*
The thatched roof is striking.
This is the villa of the world-renowned director Ozu.
I learned about its existence from the NHK program "Historical Secrets Historia" that I happened to watch.
👆Thanks to watching that program,
I was able to talk with the "hijiroban" (fire keeper) who was guiding us, in front of the hearth.
They were very kind to me, and it's a wonderful memory. 😌
There's also a kitchen and a bathroom!
It's recommended not only for the elderly,
but also for younger generations. ◎
You can experience a retro atmosphere. 🐿

Although it was relocated from its original location and is not the actual place where director Yasujiro Ozu lived, the building retains its original form and conveys a certain atmosphere.
The interior can be viewed on opening days. You can check the opening hours on the tourist association's website.
