Oyokogawa Water Park

4 (1092)ParkTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Oyokogawa Water Park (Oyokogawa Shinsui Kōen) is a riverside green space located in the Sumida ward of Tokyo, stretching along the Oyoko River between Higashi-Ōjima and Kinshichō stations. The park was established in 1993 as part of Tokyo's urban revitalization efforts to transform former industrial waterways into accessible public spaces. The Oyoko River itself is a 1.85-kilometer canal that branches from the Kyu-Nakagawa River, historically serving as an important transportation route during the Edo period before falling into decline during Japan's rapid industrialization.

The park's design emphasizes water-based recreation and environmental education, featuring restored wetlands and waterside walking paths that showcase the relationship between Tokyo's residents and its historic waterway system. The facility serves as a model for urban river rehabilitation in Japan, demonstrating how industrial canals can be transformed into ecological corridors within dense city environments. Native plant species line the banks, and the park functions as a habitat for various bird species, making it a modest but significant green refuge in eastern Tokyo.

Visitors can explore approximately 1.8 kilometers of waterside promenades that follow the river's course, offering views of traditional houseboats and modern urban landscapes. The park includes several wooden observation decks extending over the water, small gardens with seasonal plantings, and open lawns suitable for picnicking. A notable feature is the preserved section of an old lock gate system, providing insight into the canal's historical function. The park hosts occasional riverside events and serves as a popular spot for morning walks and light exercise among local residents.

The park is accessible via Higashi-Ōjima Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line, located approximately 500 meters from the northern entrance, or from Kinshichō Station served by the JR Sobu Line and Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line, roughly 800 meters from the southern entrance. Admission is free year-round. The park's relatively low tourist profile makes it an authentic neighborhood destination for visitors seeking to experience everyday Tokyo life away from major attractions.

What other travelers are saying about Oyokogawa Water Park

The park is walkable from the Oshiage Skytree station. Children can dip and splash in the water. There are benches along the park stretch and people can also cycle. Toilets and playgrounds are available. Even if it is in the midst of the busy city area, the place is a refuge of relaxation and quietness. It can be a good walking area and since it is below the streets, children are in a safe zone.

The water in the pools wasn't as clean as I expected, which was a bit disappointing. Additionally, there was no designated space for picnics, which made it challenging. Toilets are available, but they are located quite far from the main areas, adding some inconvenience to the visit. However, the view of the Tokyo Skytree from the park is truly great, offering a nice backdrop to the visit. Overall, it’s a decent spot for a one-time visit during summer for kids to play water.
Went there in mid-March 2024, very windy and cold day, not much People there . Wonderful park. Very relaxing with a fun and long slide . Great for kids and adults. Will definitely come visit again when I'm back in the area next time.
Just popped by as we stay very close and the kids love it. The outdoor playground with the ship and the long rolling slide is great. It also has a very long nice rock stream that is a splash pad and the kids played for a few hours and really liked it. There are also benches and many vending machines around and places to sit that are shaded when the sun is out.
Peacefully stroll up behind Tokyo sky tree. A very pleasant walk that ends in a small playground. Lots of little spaces along the way for activities like football or picnicking. A restaurant marks the halfway point. Water features run the length of the park. Popular with children and dog walkers. Colorful in spring. Worth the visit if your are looking for a dirty walking path.
