Shimizu Port

4.4 (34)Transit StationPoint Of InterestTransportation ServiceEstablishment

Shimizu Port is one of Japan's most picturesque and historically rich harbors. The port has been a vital hub for maritime trade since the Edo period, linking Japan to the world through its bustling shipping routes. Its strategic location along the Pacific Ocean made it an essential gateway for goods and culture, contributing significantly to the region's prosperity.

One of the standout features of Shimizu Port is its breathtaking view of Mount Fuji, which rises majestically in the background. This view has made Shimizu Port a favorite subject for ukiyo-e artists like Hiroshige, who immortalized the scene in his iconic woodblock prints. The port’s setting is not just visually stunning but also culturally significant, reflecting Japan's deep connection to its natural surroundings.

The port is home to one of Japan's most famous fish markets, where freshly caught seafood from Suruga Bay is sold daily. The market is renowned for its high-quality tuna, a delicacy that draws visitors from all over. Nearby, the S-Pulse Dream Plaza offers a mix of modern entertainment, with shopping, dining, and a Ferris wheel that provides sweeping views of the harbor and Mount Fuji.

This time, I visited this port because of a Norwegian cruise ship docking there. It was a wonderful place. There were many volunteers to help guide us, and you could see Mount Fuji from where the ship was docked; the scenery was truly beautiful. It's definitely a port worth stopping at if you're traveling by cruise ship.
