Shin-Hotaka Ropeway

4.6 (3077)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Shin-Hotaka Ropeway offers a unique way to view Japan's scenic beauty. Located in the Northern Japan Alps of Gifu Prefecture, this ropeway is one of the few in Japan that has double-decker gondolas. The journey starts at the base of the mountain and travels up to over 2,000 meters above sea level, providing passengers with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

One of the main attractions of the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway is its ability to offer views of the Hotaka mountain range throughout the year. Each season paints the landscape with different colors, from vibrant green and wildflowers in spring and summer to rich hues of red and orange during autumn and pristine white snow in winter.

This ropeway is not just for tourists but also serves as a gateway for hikers venturing further into the Alps. At the top station, visitors can explore the observation deck, enjoy meals at the cafe, or start their hike on various trails leading deeper into the mountains.

What other travelers are saying about Shin-Hotaka Ropeway

What an amazing place, you can climb up to the top of the mountain to see Japanese alps around you, which is so magical. I went there when the snowfall happened so it’s really cold outside! It has like 2 gondolas for you to climb up, a tip: please just moving forward to the top so you can have this path to see the alps more clearly. Very interesting experience for someone who have never experienced snow before. The snow is so soft and powdery and we enjoy playing with it too much I think hahaha. Nonetheless, it’s a really great experience. You could also enjoy some hot chocolate or any snack at the cafetaria.

The Shinhotaka ropeway was amazing. Well worth going and checking it out. We got the bus pass from Takayama and the ropeway tickets in a bundle in Klook. There are souvenir shops at the base, mid station and the top station, along with great cafe at the top for lunch. You’ll need time at the top to explore the trails. During winter, expect snow up on the trail, along with incredible views of the alps. We found that clouds obscured our view sometimes, but if you’re happy to wait, the wind will usually blow them away. Really worth spending a whole day doing this.

Had a really great experience at Shinhotaka Ropeway. The views from the top were stunning, and the double-deck cable car ride itself felt unique and very smooth. The area is peaceful, the air is fresh, and everything is well-organized for visitors. It does get crowded at certain times and the tickets can feel a bit pricey, but the scenery and overall experience were absolutely worth it. A wonderful spot to enjoy Japan’s mountain landscape.
