What other travelers are saying about Shin-Hotaka Ropeway
An unforgettable experience at the Shinhotaka Ropeway. The ride itself is incredibly scenic, lifting you above forests and mountains with breathtaking panoramic views along the way. On a clear day, the sight of the Northern Alps stretching endlessly into the distance is simply spectacular.
The double-decker gondola is spacious and offers excellent visibility, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination. At the top, the observation deck provides sweeping 360-degree views that feel peaceful and awe-inspiring.
Whether you visit during autumn foliage, fresh greenery, or snow-covered winter landscapes, it’s a truly memorable experience and well worth the trip.
The entire ride, including both sections of the ropeway, takes about 20 minutes one way. Visitors often spend additional time at the observation decks and hiking trails at the top.
At the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Northern Japan Alps, including peaks like Mount Yarigatake and Mount Hotaka. On clear days, the views stretch for miles, offering a stunning natural panorama.
Yes, the ropeway operates throughout the year. Each season offers a different experience, from the green mountainsides of summer to the snowy landscapes of winter.
Yes, the top station features observation decks, a café, restrooms, and a gift shop. There is also an outdoor hot spring (onsen) where you can relax and enjoy the mountain views.
The ropeway is accessible by bus or car from Takayama and other nearby towns. There are direct buses from Takayama Station that take about 90 minutes.
Shinhotaka ropeway is best when you are lucky enough to be here during a winter blue bird day (blue sky day after a night of heavy snow). At this altitude the sky had a beautiful blue and offer beautiful color contrast with the white landscape. It took us 30mins driving from our hotel in Hirayu Onsen in this morning of 19th Feb 2025, the snow from last night seemed to had been plowed and the road was not difficult to drive as long as your car has winter tyre. Temperature at the top of the ropeway was very low at -15C but with scenery so gorgeous I totally forgot myself and the cold. Make sure to wear a warm glove, my finger nearly suffered frost-nip taking photo with a thin glove.
What an amazing place, you can climb up to the top of the mountain to see Japanese alps around you, which is so magical. I went there when the snowfall happened so it’s really cold outside!
It has like 2 gondolas for you to climb up, a tip: please just moving forward to the top so you can have this path to see the alps more clearly. Very interesting experience for someone who have never experienced snow before.
The snow is so soft and powdery and we enjoy playing with it too much I think hahaha. Nonetheless, it’s a really great experience. You could also enjoy some hot chocolate or any snack at the cafetaria.
20251228 - came here using 3 day okuhida maguruto pass. Took ropeway up to the tallest viewpoint. The view was amazing! You get to see japanese alps view of snowy white mountain top with clouds against show white base. The weather was cold and snowing and you get to take nice photos here. Recommended to come!
The Shinhotaka ropeway was amazing. Well worth going and checking it out. We got the bus pass from Takayama and the ropeway tickets in a bundle in Klook. There are souvenir shops at the base, mid station and the top station, along with great cafe at the top for lunch. You’ll need time at the top to explore the trails.
During winter, expect snow up on the trail, along with incredible views of the alps. We found that clouds obscured our view sometimes, but if you’re happy to wait, the wind will usually blow them away.
Really worth spending a whole day doing this.
