What other travelers are saying about Shin-Hotaka Ropeway
What an amazing place, you can climb up to the top of the mountain to see Japanese alps around you, which is so magical. I went there when the snowfall happened so it’s really cold outside!
It has like 2 gondolas for you to climb up, a tip: please just moving forward to the top so you can have this path to see the alps more clearly. Very interesting experience for someone who have never experienced snow before.
The snow is so soft and powdery and we enjoy playing with it too much I think hahaha. Nonetheless, it’s a really great experience. You could also enjoy some hot chocolate or any snack at the cafetaria.
The entire ride, including both sections of the ropeway, takes about 20 minutes one way. Visitors often spend additional time at the observation decks and hiking trails at the top.
At the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Northern Japan Alps, including peaks like Mount Yarigatake and Mount Hotaka. On clear days, the views stretch for miles, offering a stunning natural panorama.

20251228 - came here using 3 day okuhida maguruto pass. Took ropeway up to the tallest viewpoint. The view was amazing! You get to see japanese alps view of snowy white mountain top with clouds against show white base. The weather was cold and snowing and you get to take nice photos here. Recommended to come!
The Shinhotaka ropeway was amazing. Well worth going and checking it out. We got the bus pass from Takayama and the ropeway tickets in a bundle in Klook. There are souvenir shops at the base, mid station and the top station, along with great cafe at the top for lunch. You’ll need time at the top to explore the trails.
During winter, expect snow up on the trail, along with incredible views of the alps. We found that clouds obscured our view sometimes, but if you’re happy to wait, the wind will usually blow them away.
Really worth spending a whole day doing this.

Had a really great experience at Shinhotaka Ropeway. The views from the top were stunning, and the double-deck cable car ride itself felt unique and very smooth. The area is peaceful, the air is fresh, and everything is well-organized for visitors.
It does get crowded at certain times and the tickets can feel a bit pricey, but the scenery and overall experience were absolutely worth it. A wonderful spot to enjoy Japan’s mountain landscape.
