Yokohama Chinatown

4.1 (48070)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Yokohama Chinatown stands as Japan's largest Chinatown and one of the largest in the world, covering approximately 0.2 square kilometers in central Yokohama. Established in 1859 when the port of Yokohama opened to foreign trade, the district emerged as Chinese merchants settled alongside the foreign concession area. The community has maintained its cultural identity for over 160 years, surviving the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and World War II bombings to become a vibrant cultural and commercial hub.

The district serves as a vital bridge between Chinese and Japanese cultures, housing over 600 shops and restaurants within its boundaries. Four ornate gates mark the entrances to Chinatown, with the Zenrinmon Gate serving as the main eastern entrance. The area centers around Kanteibyo Temple, dedicated to the Chinese deity Guan Yu, which has served as the spiritual heart of the community since 1873. This Taoist temple features elaborate decorations and hosts traditional Chinese festivals throughout the year.

Visitors experience authentic Chinese cuisine ranging from traditional Cantonese dim sum to regional specialties from across China. Notable dining experiences include butaman (steamed pork buns) from street vendors, elaborate banquet meals in historic restaurants, and specialty shops selling Chinese teas, herbs, and traditional medicines. The Yokohama Doll Museum and Tin Toy Museum provide cultural context, while numerous souvenir shops offer everything from traditional Chinese crafts to modern trinkets.

Yokohama Chinatown is located in the Naka-ku district of Yokohama, easily accessible via the Minato Mirai Line to Motomachi-Chukagai Station, which provides direct access to the district. Alternatively, visitors can take the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line or JR Tokaido Line to Ishikawacho Station and walk 5 minutes to reach the area. From Tokyo, the journey takes approximately 35-40 minutes by train.

What other travelers are saying about Yokohama Chinatown

I had a great time at Yokohama Chinatown where the food was delicious and the overall street design was truly impressive. I particularly loved the giant chicken which was only 500 yen and the ice cream for 400 yen was also a highlight. It was a pretty great experience and a wonderful place for a walk to enjoy all the different sights and flavors.

Loved it. Go at night for the lovely lights and atmosphere. Felt very welcome. Lots and lots of food, sweets, and gift options. Easy to get to from Tokyo. It is very crowded but if you move off the main drag it gets a bit better. If/when I come back to Japan, I would really think about staying in this area.

Very lively and colourful neighbourhood. Yet, not jam packed with tourists as in central Tokyo for example. You can actually walk and admire things here! Many restaurants and interesting shops and there’s a train station very nearby if you’re coming from central Tokyo.

We looveee Yokohama. First of, like most if the tourists, we only planned to visit Chinatown. But once we arrived, we kinda got confused bc every shops sell food and souvenirs only. And the price is not cheap either. But worth trying. After decided to just try one of the restaurant, we headed to the brick building and want to see the ferries wheel. Instead of taking train or bus, we just walked. And that is the best way after all. We found the city is so calm (prob bc it's sunday, so no workers or traffic). We like the buildings, the air, the harbour, and we bumped into an event, which we believed it for dogs. Bc everyone was bringing their dogs in costumes. We didn't go to cup noodle museum or other attractions. Just enough for more than half day trip. Hope can be back someday bc we were in hurry to leave.

Street scene in Yokohama Chinatown, featuring a colorful traditional Chinese gate with intricate designs. People walk and shop at various stores, including restaurants and souvenir shops. Bright signs with Chinese characters are prominently displayed on the buildings.
