In this class you take part as a guest. The tea master prepares and serves the matcha, while you learn how to receive and drink it properly.

What is a nijiriguchi?

It is the small, low guest entrance to a tea room. Samurai left their swords outside and entered with heads bowed, a sign that all are equal inside.

Is matcha very bitter?

Many visitors from abroad find matcha rich and bitter at first. Seasonal wagashi sweets are served alongside it.

Yes. The class ends with a photo shoot in kimono, and the photo data is sent to your designated email address.

Join a samurai-style tea ceremony near Osaka Castle as the guest of a tea master, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing. Learn how to enter the tea room, bow, and receive matcha, then enjoy seasonal wagashi and a photo shoot in kimono.

Arrive 30 minutes early to change into traditional Japanese clothing.
Children aged 6 and older can take part.
Remove bracelets, rings, and watches before entering the tea room.
If sitting upright is difficult, you are welcome to relax your legs.
Wear an undershirt or short-sleeved T-shirt and underwear beneath the kimono.
Please use the restroom before changing into kimono.
All guests sign a liability waiver before the class.
Arriving more than 30 minutes late may mean entry is refused.
The class is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.

Additional Information

Not recommended for travelers with back problems or for pregnant travelers.
Smartphone photos are allowed, but no selfies or photos of other guests.
Tripods and personal video recording are not permitted during the class.
