Himuro Shrine is located in Nara City, Japan, and is a shrine dedicated to the “Ice God.” According to legend, the Ice God protects people from heatwaves and ensures a plentiful supply of ice and snow during the winter. The shrine’s history dates back to the Nara period and is deeply connected to Nara’s ice festival rituals.
One of the unique features of Himuro Shrine is the “Ice Omikuji” (Ice Fortune). This is a special method of drawing fortunes:
1. Purchase a fortune: Visitors can purchase an omikuji (fortune) at the shrine.
2. Place it on ice: The fortune is placed on a block of ice at the shrine.
3. Reveal the fortune: Over time, the text on the fortune gradually becomes visible, symbolizing divine prophecy and blessings.
