Konpira Grand Theater (Kanamaruza)

4.4 (925)Performing Arts TheaterEvent VenuePoint Of InterestEstablishment

Konpira Grand Theater, known as Kanamaruza, is a historic kabuki theater in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture, Shikoku, constructed in 1835 during the late Edo period. Built to entertain pilgrims visiting Konpira Shrine (Kotohira-gu), one of Shikoku's most important shrines, the theater served the pilgrimage town infrastructure. Kanamaruza is Japan's oldest surviving kabuki playhouse, designated an Important Cultural Property. The theater fell into disuse in the early 20th century but was restored in the 1970s, maintaining original Edo-period design and construction techniques.

The theater preserves authentic Edo-period kabuki theater architecture and functions as a performance venue. The wooden structure features a revolving stage (mawari-butai), hanamichi (raised walkway), trap doors, and traditional staging mechanisms operated manually with ropes and human power. The interior includes masu box seating on tatami mats, wooden pillars, and minimal lighting recreating historical viewing conditions.

Visitors tour the theater during non-performance periods, exploring seating areas, viewing the stage, and observing traditional stage mechanisms. Guided tours explain theater history, kabuki traditions, and architectural features. Demonstrations may show manual operation of stage mechanisms. Tours include backstage areas, dressing rooms, and storage spaces. During the annual spring kabuki season (typically April), visitors attend actual performances experiencing traditional theater in authentic Edo-period setting with traditional staging, costumes, and acting styles.

Konpira Grand Theater is near Konpira Shrine, accessible from JR Kotohira Station or Kotoden Kotohira Station, both approximately 10 to 15 minutes walking. From Okayama or Takamatsu, Kotohira is approximately 1 hour by limited express. Theater tour admission: 500 to 700 yen.

What other travelers are saying about Konpira Grand Theater (Kanamaruza)
