Kurashiki Museum of Natural History

The Kurashiki Museum of Natural History opened in 1983 in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, becoming one of Japan's important regional natural history institutions. The museum was established to preserve and display the rich natural heritage of the Setouchi region and to promote environmental education among local communities and visitors. It occupies a purpose-built facility designed to accommodate extensive collections spanning geology, paleontology, botany, and zoology.

The museum holds significant collections documenting the natural history of western Japan, particularly the Inland Sea area. Its paleontological exhibits include fossils from the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras discovered in Okayama and surrounding prefectures, offering insights into ancient ecosystems that once existed in the region. The botanical and zoological collections showcase the biodiversity of the Setouchi climate zone, which is characterized by mild temperatures and relatively low rainfall. The museum is located approximately 1.5 kilometers northwest of Kurashiki Station. Visitors can take a bus from the station, with the journey taking around 10 minutes, or walk in approximately 20 minutes. The museum is situated near the Kurashiki Sports Park, making it accessible by car with parking facilities available on-site. Standard admission is 150 yen for adults, with reduced rates for students and free entry for children under 15 and seniors over 65.
