Motonosumi Shrine

4.2 (12869)Shinto ShrineTourist AttractionPlace Of WorshipAssociation Or OrganizationPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Motonosumi Shrine is a Shinto shrine on coastal cliffs in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, overlooking the Sea of Japan. Founded in 1955 after a local fisherman received a divine message, the shrine honors Inari, the deity of prosperity, fertility, and success. Though recently established, it reflects ongoing Shinto traditions of divine revelation response. CNN ranked it among "Japan's 31 Most Beautiful Places" in 2015, elevating it from local spiritual site to major tourist attraction. The dramatic coastal location and distinctive features drove this recognition.

The shrine features 123 vermillion torii gates forming a tunnel descending the clifftop toward the sea over approximately 100 meters. The bright red gates contrast with blue ocean and sky, green coastal vegetation, and rocky shoreline, creating striking photographic scenery. An unusual feature is an offertory box mounted atop a 5-meter-high torii gate, requiring visitors to toss coins upward. Successfully landing a coin is believed to bring good fortune. The coastal position offers dramatic ocean views with waves crashing against rocks below the cliffs. The site combines religious structures with rugged coastal landscape.

Visitors walk the torii gate tunnel from upper shrine areas toward the ocean clifftop. Multiple photography viewpoints capture gates extending seaward. The elevated offertory box provides a challenging coin-tossing activity. The grounds offer panoramic Sea of Japan views with coastal rock formations below. Sunrise and sunset create dramatic lighting on vermillion gates against sky and water. Social media popularity has increased visitor numbers, especially during peak seasons and weekends.

The shrine is approximately 40 to 50 minutes by car from JR Nagato-Shi Station via coastal roads. Public transportation is extremely limited with no direct bus service. Most visitors use rental cars from Nagato City or Hagi City. Shimonoseki is approximately 90 minutes by car; Yamaguchi City requires 90 to 120 minutes. Limited parking capacity creates crowding during peak periods. The isolated location means limited nearby facilities.

The offertory box is mounted atop a 5-meter-high torii gate, requiring visitors to toss coins upward. Successfully landing a coin in the elevated box is believed to bring good fortune.

Sunrise and sunset create particularly dramatic lighting conditions that enhance the vermillion gates against the sky and water, though these times may be crowded due to social media popularity.

Visits typically last 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on time spent photographing and attempting the coin toss at the elevated offertory box.

Nearby attractions include Omijima Island, Tsunoshima Bridge, and the historic town of Hagi, all suitable for exploring western Yamaguchi Prefecture's coastal and cultural sites.
