Shiroishi Castle

Shiroishi Castle stands in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture, as a faithful reconstruction of a historic fortress that played a crucial role in northern Japan's feudal history. Originally built in the 10th century, the castle served as a strategic military stronghold for the Date clan and later the Katakura family, who ruled the domain for over 260 years during the Edo period. The castle's most famous resident was Katakura Kojūrō Kagetsuna, a legendary samurai and trusted retainer of Date Masamune, one of Japan's most powerful feudal lords.

The current three-story wooden structure was rebuilt in 1995 using traditional construction methods and materials, following historical records and archaeological research. Unlike many Japanese castles reconstructed with modern concrete, Shiroishi Castle features authentic wooden architecture that provides visitors with a genuine sense of feudal-era castle design. The reconstruction accurately represents the castle's appearance during its 17th-century peak.

Visitors can explore the castle's interior, which houses historical exhibits about the Katakura clan and the region's samurai heritage. The top floor observation deck offers panoramic views of Shiroishi City and the surrounding Miyagi landscape. The castle grounds bloom with approximately 300 cherry trees in spring, making it a popular hanami (cherry blossom viewing) destination. The adjacent Katakura House ruins and samurai residence area provide additional historical context.

Shiroishi Castle is accessible via JR Shiroishi Station on the Tohoku Main Line, approximately 10 minutes by bus or 25 minutes on foot. From Tokyo, the journey takes around 2 hours via Tohoku Shinkansen to Shiroishi-Zaō Station, followed by a local train connection. Admission to the castle costs ¥400 for adults and ¥200 for children.
