Watatsu Beach

Watatsu Beach stretches along the coast of Oki Islands in Shimane Prefecture, forming one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in the San'in region. Located on Dōgo Island, the largest of the Oki archipelago, this beach is part of the Daisen-Oki National Park, designated for its geological and ecological importance. The area has been inhabited for centuries, with the Oki Islands serving as a place of exile for emperors during Japan's medieval period, including Emperor Go-Toba in the 13th century.

The beach's most remarkable feature is its dramatic rock formations and crystal-clear waters that reveal the volcanic origins of the Oki Islands. The coastline combines white sand beaches with rugged cliffs and sea caves, created over millennia by wind and wave erosion. The waters here are notably transparent, allowing visibility of underwater rock formations and marine life even from the shore. The surrounding area supports diverse ecosystems, with unique plant species that have evolved in isolation on the islands.

Visitors come to Watatsu Beach primarily for swimming during summer months, snorkeling in the exceptionally clear waters, and exploring the geological formations along the shore. The beach offers opportunities for kayaking and observing the dramatic sunset views over the Sea of Japan. Nearby walking trails connect to observation points overlooking the coast, providing perspectives of the island's volcanic topography. The beach area includes basic facilities such as parking and restrooms, though amenities remain modest compared to mainland tourist beaches.

Reaching Watatsu Beach requires traveling to the Oki Islands first. From Sakaiminato or Shichirui Port, ferries operate to Dōgo Island, with journey times of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Once on the island, local buses run infrequently, making car rental the most practical option for reaching the beach, located about 30 minutes from the main port town of Saigō. Access to the beach itself is free, though ferry costs and car rental should be factored into travel planning. The remote location means visitor numbers remain relatively low even during peak season.
