The Yobuko Morning Market in Saga Prefecture is one of Japan's most celebrated morning markets, with a history spanning over 100 years. Located in the coastal town of Yobuko, known for its squid fishing industry, the market has been a vital trading hub where local fishermen and farmers have sold their fresh catches and produce since the Taisho era (1912-1926). The market runs daily along a 200-meter stretch of covered arcade in the town center, maintaining traditions that have been passed down through generations of local vendors.

The market's cultural significance lies in its role as a living representation of traditional Japanese market culture and the region's maritime heritage. Yobuko is renowned throughout Japan for its ika (squid), particularly the transparent yari-ika (spear squid) caught in the nearby Genkai Sea. The market reflects the deep connection between the local community and the sea, with many stalls run by elderly women who have been selling here for decades, preserving authentic interactions rarely found in modern Japan.

Visitors can experience the vibrant atmosphere of vendors calling out their wares while browsing stalls selling ultra-fresh seafood, including the famous Yobuko squid often still moving on ice, seasonal vegetables, dried fish products, local crafts, and prepared foods. The squid can be purchased whole or prepared as ika sashimi to eat immediately. Other popular items include fresh sea urchin, various shellfish, locally grown citrus fruits, and regional pickles. Several small restaurants near the market serve breakfast featuring the morning's catch, with ika sashimi being the signature dish.

The market is accessible from Karatsu Station via the Showa Bus bound for Yobuko, taking approximately 40 minutes. From Fukuoka, visitors can take the subway to Meinohama Station, then transfer to the JR Chikuhi Line to Karatsu. By car, Yobuko is roughly 90 minutes from Fukuoka city via the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway. Entry to the market itself is free, though purchases are at individual vendor prices.
