Sendai is famous for being the largest city in the Tohoku region and for its connection to Date Masamune, a powerful samurai lord. It is also known for the Tanabata Festival, scenic spots like Matsushima Bay, and its local specialty, gyutan (grilled beef tongue).

Key attractions include Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle) ruins, Zuihoden Mausoleum (the resting place of Date Masamune), the Sendai City Museum, and the scenic Matsushima Bay, which is considered one of Japan’s three most beautiful views.

The Sendai Tanabata Festival is one of Japan’s most famous festivals, held annually in August. The city is decorated with colorful streamers and traditional paper decorations, attracting visitors from all over Japan. It celebrates the star festival based on a legend of two lovers separated by the Milky Way.

Sendai is easily accessible by train from Tokyo via the Tohoku Shinkansen, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. It is also served by Sendai International Airport, with domestic and international flights, and by highway buses from major cities.

The best time to visit Sendai is in early August for the Tanabata Festival or during spring (March-May) for cherry blossoms and autumn (October-November) for fall foliage. Winter (December-February) offers opportunities for skiing in nearby mountains.
