Hikiyama Exhibition Hall

The Hikiyama Exhibition Hall is located in central Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, dedicated to preserving and displaying the ornate floats used in the Karatsu Kunchi Festival, one of Kyushu's most celebrated autumn festivals. The hall provides year-round access to 14 hikiyama floats that parade through Karatsu during the festival each November. These floats date from the Edo period to the early 20th century, with the oldest constructed in 1819. Each hikiyama features lacquered wood, papier-mâché, and decorative elements depicting mythical creatures, historical figures, and symbolic animals including lions, dragons, helmets, and sea bream.

The hikiyama represent Karatsu's maritime prosperity and merchant culture during the Edo period. Wealthy merchant districts and neighborhood associations commissioned the floats, competing to create the most impressive displays. The Karatsu Kunchi Festival has been designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the Japanese government for its historical continuity and cultural value. The construction techniques, involving skilled artisans in lacquerwork, carpentry, and decorative arts, represent traditional craftsmanship passed through generations.

Visitors can examine the 14 hikiyama floats displayed in a purpose-built facility showcasing their scale and detail. The floats range from 5 to 7 meters in height and weigh several tons, though their construction allows them to be pulled through streets during the festival. Interpretive displays provide historical context about each float's creation, symbolism, and maintaining neighborhood. Video presentations show the floats during the Karatsu Kunchi Festival, held annually from November 2-4, when they are paraded by teams in traditional costume.

The hall is located approximately 10 minutes' walk from JR Karatsu Station. From Fukuoka, the journey takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes via the JR Chikuhi Line. The hall is situated near other attractions including Karatsu Castle and the central shopping district. Parking is available nearby. Admission is approximately ¥310 for adults and ¥150 for children, with combined tickets available for entry with Karatsu Castle at reduced rates.
