Tsunoshima Island

Tsunoshima Island is a small island located off the coast of Yamaguchi Prefecture in southwestern Japan, connected to the mainland by the iconic Tsunoshima Bridge. The island spans approximately 4.1 square kilometers and is home to around 300 residents, primarily concentrated in fishing communities. Historically, the island developed as a modest fishing settlement, with its economy centered on marine harvests and traditional island life that has persisted for generations.

The island's most distinctive feature is the 1,780-meter Tsunoshima Bridge, completed in 2000, which stretches across the cobalt blue waters of the Sea of Japan. This elegant bridge has become one of the most photographed coastal scenes in Japan, frequently appearing in automobile commercials and travel media due to its striking contrast against the turquoise sea. The bridge offers no pedestrian walkway, so visitors experience the dramatic ocean views while driving across.

Natural attractions include Tsunoshima Lighthouse, built in 1876 during the Meiji period, making it one of the oldest Western-style lighthouses in Japan. Standing 29.6 meters tall, the lighthouse remains operational and visitors can climb its interior for panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. The island features several beaches with notably clear waters, particularly Kokumin-shukusha Beach on the western side, where white sand meets shallow turquoise waters ideal for swimming during summer months.

Tsunoshima can be reached by car from Shimonoseki in approximately 60 minutes or from Hagi in about 50 minutes. The nearest major access point is JR Takibe Station, located roughly 10 kilometers from the bridge entrance. From the station, visitors can take a local bus or taxi to reach the island. There is no toll for crossing Tsunoshima Bridge. Parking is available near the beach areas and lighthouse, typically free of charge, though spaces can be limited during peak tourist seasons and holidays.
