Yobuko Port
Yobuko Port is a historic fishing harbor located in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, on the northwestern coast of Kyushu. The port has served as a vital fishing center for centuries, with records of its maritime activities dating back to the Edo period. Its strategic position along the Genkai Sea made it an important stopping point for ships traveling between Japan and the Asian mainland, and it developed into one of Kyushu's most productive fishing ports.
The port is renowned throughout Japan for its squid fishing industry, particularly the catching of kensaki squid (spear squid). Yobuko's morning market, which has operated for over 200 years, is one of Japan's top three morning markets alongside those in Wajima and Katsuura. The market stretches approximately 200 meters along a narrow street near the harbor, where local vendors sell fresh seafood, vegetables, and regional products. The live squid displays are a signature attraction, with fishmongers demonstrating the cutting and preparation of incredibly fresh squid that is still translucent.
Visitors come to Yobuko primarily to experience the morning market and sample the port's famous ika sashimi (squid sashimi), which is served so fresh that it remains semi-transparent and slightly sweet. Numerous restaurants and shops line the harbor area, many offering squid prepared in multiple ways including sashimi, tempura, and grilled preparations. The port area also provides views of the Yobuko Bridge, a striking red suspension bridge that connects to nearby islands and has become a local landmark.
The port serves as a departure point for sightseeing cruises to the Nanatsugama Caves, a series of seven basalt sea caves formed by volcanic activity and wave erosion. These 30-minute boat tours allow visitors to view the dramatic coastal geology up close, though entry into the caves depends on weather and sea conditions.
Yobuko Port is accessible by bus from Karatsu Station on the JR Karatsu Line, with the journey taking approximately 30 minutes. Buses run regularly throughout the day. From Fukuoka, visitors can reach Karatsu by train in about 70 minutes via the JR Chikuhi Line. There is no admission fee for visiting the port area or the morning market.
