I echo those who recommend staying overnight. However access to the island via the ferry is very dependent on the weather so there are limited windows to plan your trip. The beach is extremely beautiful and well maintained. Unfortunately because of the access the whole experience of arriving here feels manufactured. We also understand that this is necessary to preserve a place as delicate as this.
The beach itself is nice, but our experience was a bit mixed. If you want to snorkel, you’re required to rent a life jacket, which felt unnecessary. Interestingly, swimming with just goggles is allowed without one. It was also extremely crowded with tourists. Another important thing to know is that you’re not allowed to swim or snorkel outside the designated swimming area. On the plus side, there’s an easy bus connection to and from the beach.
Amazing view. I wish I can stay longer in Tokashiki Island and explore more. But, for a firsttimer, Aharen beach is quite an experience.
From the port, there is one bus that takes you straight to aharen beach. Its dedicated bus for the route. Cost ¥400 one way. You can also rent a bike, but the island is full of hills so biking will need extra energy.
Dont forget to rent the umbrella and enjoy the beach as long as you can. There are enough cafes/restos around the beach with various menu. You can also bring your food to the beach.
Don‘t trust the youtubers…
It is a beautiful beach. All the photos you can find are totally true. But if you are here for some snorkeling, because some youtubers and/or influencers recommended it, you will be massively disappointed. Snorkeling is only allowed with a lifejacket. Renting one is 500 Yen and to keep idiots from damaging the corals I can understand it. BUT: snorekling is then still only allowed in a very small area. I would understand it if they say, the other areas are protected and so on. But they are not. You can absolutely snorkel anywhere, as long as you pay for it in form of a snorkeling tour. Because you need a guide to watch over you.
I was quite annoyed about it (especialy because of said „influencers“ that tell you otherwise online.)
But seeing how disrespectful tourits behaved around the corals in the allowed area, I started to understand, unfortunately.
Long story short: if you want to go snorkeling, calculate a few extra thousands in for a tour.
