Akasaka Palace, officially known as the State Guest House, stands as Japan's only neo-baroque palace and serves as the nation's premier facility for hosting visiting dignitaries and heads of state. Located in Tokyo's Minato Ward, this architectural masterpiece was originally constructed in 1909 as the Crown Prince's residence during the Meiji era. Designed by Katayama Tōkuma, the palace was modeled after European palaces, particularly drawing inspiration from Versailles and Buckingham Palace, representing Japan's ambition to demonstrate its modernization to the Western world.

The palace was designated a National Treasure in 2009, becoming the only modern building to receive this prestigious status. After serving various governmental functions throughout the 20th century, it was extensively renovated and reopened as the State Guest House in 1974. The building exemplifies the Meiji period's architectural philosophy of harmonizing Western design with Japanese craftsmanship, featuring elaborate decorative elements including crystal chandeliers, intricate ceiling paintings, and luxurious furnishings that showcase the highest level of Japanese artisanal skill.

The tour includes the Main Hall with its grand central staircase, the Chō-shun-no-ma (Hall of Butterflies and Birds) adorned with Gobelin tapestries, the Kacho-no-ma (Flower and Bird Room) featuring stunning ceiling paintings, and the Asahi-no-ma (Morning Sun Room) used for state banquets. The Japanese-style annex, Yūshintei, offers a contrasting experience with traditional architecture and gardens. Photography is permitted in designated areas, allowing visitors to capture the palace's ornate interiors.

Admission fees are ¥1,500 for adults and ¥500 for university and high school students for the main building tour. A combined ticket including the Japanese-style annex costs ¥2,000 for adults. Visitors must present identification and pass through security screening.
