Anrakuji Temple

Anrakuji Temple is a Buddhist temple located in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan, with a history dating back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The temple was founded by the monks Hōnen and Anraku, disciples of the Pure Land Buddhism movement. According to legend, the temple's establishment is connected to a tragic story involving two court ladies who secretly attended Hōnen's teachings and later became nuns, leading to their execution and the eventual founding of this temple in their memory.

The temple is particularly renowned for its thatched-roof main hall, a distinctive architectural feature that sets it apart from many other Kyoto temples. Anrakuji is also celebrated for its seasonal beauty, especially during autumn when the temple grounds transform into a spectacular display of fall foliage. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus to the Ginkakuji area and walk about 15 minutes south along the Philosopher's Path. Admission fees are typically around 500 yen for adults.
