Dazaifu Government Office Ruins, Fukuoka

The Dazaifu Government Office Ruins represent the remains of ancient Japan's western capital, which served as the administrative center governing Kyushu from the late 7th century to the late 12th century. Established 1,300 years ago, this historic site functioned as Japan's diplomatic and defense headquarters, strategically positioned to manage relations with East Asian nations and protect Japan's western frontier.

The complex was built in Chodo-in style, similar to Heijo-kyu Palace, and comprised a main government office, related administrative buildings, and a guest house for welcoming foreign delegations. Known as the 'Tofuro Ruins,' this site served as the political core of Dazaifu, functioning both as a key defense position and a diplomatic window for negotiations with Asian continent powers. The ruins showcase Japan's sophisticated ancient urban planning and its role as a major international exchange hub during the Nara and Heian periods.

Visitors can explore the expansive archaeological site, which now exists as a peaceful park setting where foundation stones and structural remnants reveal the scale of this once-mighty governmental complex. The site is also celebrated in the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest poetry anthology, where it appears under the name ""Toonomikado,"" adding literary significance to its historical importance. The ruins are protected by two ancient mountain fortresses, Ono-jo to the north and Kii-jo to the south, both built in 665 as outer defensive walls.

The site is located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, positioned on the southern slopes of Mount Ono. From Tofuromae Station, the ruins are accessible via a 10-minute walk, while from Dazaifu Station it requires a 30-minute walk. Alternative bus service operates from both stations, taking 5 minutes and costing 100 yen, with three buses per hour from either station. The government office ruins are also within walking distance of Kanzeon-ji Temple. The site offers free admission and provides an excellent complement to visits to nearby Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and other historical attractions in the area.
