Kanzeonji Temple, Dazaifu

Kanzeonji Temple stands as one of Japan's most historically significant Buddhist temples, founded by Emperor Tenji in honor of his mother, Empress Saimei, who ruled as one of only eight female regents in Japanese history. During its height, the temple complex included 49 sub-temples, making it the most important religious center in Kyushu during the Nara and Heian periods. Located in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, the temple served as a spiritual cornerstone when Dazaifu functioned as the political center of western Japan.

The temple houses several nationally designated cultural treasures, most notably its ancient bronze bell, which ranks among Japan's oldest temple bells and holds National Treasure status. The grounds and ruins of Kanzeonji were designated as a National Historic Site in 1970, recognizing their exceptional historical value. The temple's treasure house contains numerous significant Buddhist sculptures, including large-scale works and a notable sculpture of Daikokuten.

Kanzeonji Temple is accessible via Dazaifu, located 15 kilometers southeast of central Fukuoka City. Take the Nishitetsu Railway to Dazaifu Station, which is the terminal of the Dazaifu Line branch off the main Tenjin Omuta Line. Direct buses also operate from Hakata Bus Terminal, with the journey from Fukuoka Airport taking less than 30 minutes. From Dazaifu Station, take a local bus to Uchiyama Bus Stop to reach the temple. Visitors holding the Fukuoka City Tourist Pass receive discounts on the temple's exhibition space admission.
