Dragonfly Nature Park

4.2 (26)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment
Last updated Mar 31, 2026

Dragonfly Nature Park stands as the world's first dragonfly sanctuary, established in 1985 in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. The park's creation was sparked in 1978 when a development project threatened to destroy the last habitat of the Beccou dragonfly in Kochi Prefecture. This prompted conservation efforts that led to WWF Japan purchasing land for the sanctuary, marking the beginning of a pioneering dragonfly conservation initiative operated by the Society for the Study of Dragonflies and Nature.

The park's natural significance is remarkable, with 81 species of dragonflies confirmed in the area, representing the highest density of dragonfly species in Japan for a sanctuary of comparable size. The nearby Shimanto River, often called Japan's last clear stream, provides pristine water conditions that support this exceptional biodiversity. The river system itself hosts 180 species of fish and 90 different kinds of dragonflies. Beyond dragonflies, the park's 50-hectare grounds shelter over 700 species of wild plants and numerous other creatures, creating a thriving ecosystem carefully maintained through human stewardship.

Visitors can explore both the outdoor nature park and the Shimanto River Gakuyukan Hall Akitsuio museum complex. The museum comprises the Dragonfly Hall and Fish Hall, displaying the world's largest permanent collection of 1,000 dragonfly species from around the globe and 300 species of freshwater and brackish water fish, many native to the Shimanto River.

Throughout the park's walking trails, visitors can observe dragonflies in their natural habitat, witnessing behaviors such as egg-laying, hunting, and emergence. The park transforms seasonally, with purple iris flowers blooming from late May to early June and around 3,000 water lilies flourishing until late September. Special activities include fish feeding sessions and organized dragonfly observation events.

By train, take the JR limited express from Kochi Station to Nakamura Station (approximately 1 hour 40 minutes), then continue by taxi for 10 minutes or take a local train to Gudo Station followed by an 8-minute taxi ride or 20-minute walk. By car, the park is roughly 30 minutes from Shimantocho Chuo IC via the Kochi Expressway. Museum admission fees apply for the Gakuyukan Hall, with the outdoor nature park grounds and gift shop accessible free of charge. Free parking accommodates 80 vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adult dragonflies can be seen between March and December, making the park accessible for most of the year. From late May to early June, the park turns purple with iris flowers, while around 3,000 water lilies bloom until late September. Summer offers the chance to see the butterfly dragonfly with its distinctive iridescent blue wings, while different dragonfly species appear throughout the seasons. The park operates year-round, so visitors can experience varied wildlife depending on when they arrive.

The outdoor nature park grounds are free to enter. However, admission fees apply for the Shimanto River Gakuyukan Hall Akitsuio museum complex, which houses the Dragonfly Hall and Fish Hall with their extensive collections. The museum displays the world's largest permanent collection of dragonfly and fish species. Visitors can access the park's walking trails, ponds, and outdoor areas without purchasing museum tickets.

The park has walking paths where visitors can see around 60 species of dragonflies throughout the year, with 81 kinds found in total within Shimanto City. The dragonflies inhabit various areas including ponds, streams, and even a rice paddy within the park grounds. Visitors may see dragonflies and damselflies laying eggs around the ponds, streams, and rice paddy if timing is right. Sitting quietly increases your chances of having dragonflies land nearby.

A typical visit can range from one to several hours depending on your interests. If you only explore the outdoor nature park and walking trails, allow 1-2 hours to observe dragonflies and enjoy the seasonal flowers. Adding the museum complex requires another 1-2 hours to view the extensive dragonfly and fish collections. Photography enthusiasts and serious nature observers may want to dedicate a full day, especially during peak dragonfly activity periods.

Yes, the park is well-suited for families with children. The combination of outdoor exploration and indoor museum exhibits provides varied educational experiences. Children can observe living dragonflies in their natural habitat, learn about aquatic ecosystems, and participate in activities like the exciting pirarucu fish feeding experience at 4:00 PM. The free outdoor areas allow families to enjoy nature without the pressure of admission fees, while the walking paths are accessible for various ages and mobility levels.

Traveler reviews

Although it was a little late in the season, I still saw a field of rapeseed flowers. Besides the cherry blossoms, this was probably the only place like this on this bike path.

It's a very lovely place. The combination of willows and rape blossoms is wonderful. There's a festival during the rape blossom season, so it gets quite lively. If you go after it rains, there are puddles in several places, and the rape blossoms are reflected on the water's surface, creating a truly beautiful sight. Those planning to take photos should go in the morning.

The rapeseed blossom festival was held on the Shimanto River riverbed. It wasn't crowded, so I was able to enjoy it at my leisure. Admission and parking were free.

The flowers are not as widespread as you might expect. There are simple toilets available.

It looks really beautiful from certain angles. It's a bit of a shame that there weren't enough food stalls.
