Irino Beach

Irino Beach stretches along 4 kilometers of pristine coastline in Kuroshio Town, Kochi Prefecture on Japan's Shikoku island. This expansive black sand beach formed from volcanic sediment carried by the Kuroshio Current, creating one of western Japan's most distinctive coastal landscapes. The area gained recognition as a National Natural Monument in 1928 due to its unique geological features and exceptional natural beauty.

The beach serves as a critical nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles between May and August, with hundreds of females arriving annually to lay their eggs. Local conservation efforts have protected this tradition for generations, making Irino Beach one of Japan's most important turtle nesting sites. The surrounding pine forest, planted over centuries to prevent erosion, creates a dramatic backdrop against the Pacific Ocean.

Visitors can participate in guided turtle watching tours during nesting season, operated by the local marine conservation center with advance reservations required. The beach offers excellent surfing conditions year-round, particularly popular among experienced surfers due to consistent swells from the Pacific. Walking and cycling paths wind through the coastal pine groves, providing scenic routes for nature observation. The nearby Katsurahama Aquarium displays local marine life and turtle conservation exhibits.

The closest access point is Tosa-Kuroshio Railway's Tosa-Saga Station, located 15 kilometers inland from the beach. Local buses run twice daily between the station and Irino Beach, taking approximately 30 minutes. Rental cars provide more flexibility and are available at nearby Nakamura Station. The beach has no admission fee and remains open year-round, though turtle viewing tours cost ¥1,500 per adult and require booking through Kuroshio Town's tourism office at least 48 hours in advance.
