What other travelers are saying about Former Hokkaido Government Building
We visited the Former Hokkaido Government Office, affectionately known as the Red Brick Office, during our walk around Sapporo and were pleasantly surprised by how charming it was. The red-brick architecture really stands out in the city—it’s elegant, classic, and photogenic from every angle.
Even though restoration works were ongoing, the surrounding gardens were still open and beautifully maintained. We strolled through paths lined with flowers and trees, and there were plenty of spots to stop for photos or just enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Inside, we explored some of the history exhibits and even saw a reconstruction of the Governor’s office. It’s not a huge museum, but it’s rich in Hokkaido’s heritage and doesn’t take long to explore.
This place felt like a calm, green pause in the middle of the city and gave us a meaningful glimpse into Hokkaido’s past. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Sapporo.
It is a beautiful place that the garden portion is opens to public. I think~
The garden itself is beautiful too with large trees, flower beds and couple ponds.
I can see people sitting on the bench throughout the park next by the water or under the trees!
The tulip is blooming at the time when I visit it. Great place for some nice photos!
We came here during our summer trip on August 1st, 2025, it was a hot day so we decided to see the museum and enjoy the air con 🤭

And by the end you can buy souvenirs from the shop, they also have restaurant, but you have queue if you want to eat there
I came here in summer 2023 and the government office building was under construction. And the front was covered. This time I got to see the real building which was very beautiful but still inside was under renovation until July 2025. Giving me more reasons to come back to visit. There’s a spot on the left side facing the building. A bridge on the pond which reminded me of Monet’s painting.
