Odori Park

Odori Park is the grand civic centerpiece of Sapporo, a long and beautifully landscaped boulevard stretching 1.5 kilometers through the heart of the city from east to west.

It is the most recognizable public space in all of Hokkaido and serves as the cultural, social, and geographical dividing line between the northern and southern halves of central Sapporo.

The park was established during the city's original urban planning in the Meiji era, designed by early city planners who modeled Sapporo's grid layout on Western city designs. 

The wide green corridor was intended from the beginning as a firebreak, a public gathering space, and a defining civic feature of the new northern capital.

The park spans 13 blocks from east to west, each block containing its own distinct plantings, fountains, sculptures, and seasonal installations. Walking the full length of the park from Sapporo TV Tower at the eastern end to the Sapporo City Hall area in the west takes visitors through a constantly changing series of garden spaces and public artworks.

The Sapporo TV Tower, standing at 147.2 meters at the eastern entrance of the park, is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Built in 1957, its observation deck offers the best elevated view along the full length of Odori Park and across the surrounding city grid, particularly beautiful during seasonal events when the park is illuminated or filled with activity.

Odori Park is the primary venue for Sapporo's most famous annual events. The Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri), held every February, transforms the park into an extraordinary open-air exhibition of massive snow and ice sculptures, some reaching heights of over 15 meters. The festival draws approximately 2 million visitors every year and is one of the largest winter festivals in the world.

The Snow Festival has been held continuously since 1950, when local high school students built six snow sculptures in the park. It has since grown into an internationally recognized event with sculptures crafted by teams from countries around the world competing alongside Japanese entries.

During summer, the park hosts the Sapporo Summer Festival from late July through August, when the central blocks are transformed into an enormous outdoor beer garden. The Sapporo Beer Garden section of the festival is one of the largest open-air beer gardens in Japan, celebrating Hokkaido's brewing heritage in a lively and festive atmosphere.

Autumn brings vivid foliage to the park's extensive tree plantings, with elm, poplar, and lilac trees turning golden along the full length of the boulevard. The park is particularly associated with lilac blossoms in May and June, and Sapporo has adopted the lilac as its official city flower, with thousands of the trees planted throughout the park and surrounding streets.

The Sapporo City War Memorial and several important public sculptures are distributed across the park's blocks, reflecting its role as a space of civic memory and community identity. The fountains and water features active during the warmer months add further life and movement to the green spaces.

The underground Odori Station sits directly beneath the park and serves as one of the busiest transit interchanges in Sapporo. It connects the Namboku Line, Tozai Line, and Toho Line of the Sapporo Municipal Subway, making the park instantly accessible from virtually every corner of the city.
