Fujita Memorial Garden, Hirosaki

The Fujita Memorial Garden is a distinguished Japanese landscape garden located in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, in northern Japan. Created in 1919 by Kenichi Fujita, a wealthy local businessman and industrialist, the garden was designed as a private retreat for the Fujita family. Spanning approximately 21,800 square meters, it ranks among the most scenic gardens in the Tohoku region and was designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 2003, recognizing its exceptional cultural and aesthetic value.

The garden exemplifies traditional Japanese landscape design principles, featuring three distinct sections that showcase different styles. The lower garden presents a pond-centered strolling garden with winding paths, stone lanterns, and carefully placed rocks that create scenic vistas at every turn. The middle garden incorporates Western-influenced design elements, reflecting the Meiji-era fascination with international culture. The upper garden maintains a more natural, hillside aesthetic with seasonal plantings. The property also includes a Western-style house and Japanese-style buildings that formerly served as the Fujita family residence, adding architectural interest to the landscape.

Visitors can experience the garden's seasonal transformations throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, and vibrant foliage in autumn. The garden's teahouse, Showa no Yakata, serves traditional matcha and Japanese sweets with views overlooking the lower pond. Walking the garden's paths typically requires 45 minutes to one hour for a complete circuit. The elevated terrain provides panoramic views of Hirosaki Castle and Mount Iwaki on clear days, connecting the garden visually to the broader landscape of the Tsugaru region.

Fujita Memorial Garden is located approximately 2 kilometers northwest of Hirosaki Station. Visitors can reach the garden by taking the Dotemachi Loop Bus from Hirosaki Station and alighting at the Fujita Teien-mae stop, which takes about 15 minutes. Taxis from the station require roughly 10 minutes. The garden is also within walking distance of Hirosaki Castle, making it convenient to visit both attractions in a single day. Admission is charged, with standard adult tickets priced at 320 yen (prices subject to change).
