Mount Iwaki is a beautiful and important volcano in Aomori Prefecture. It is often called the “Tsugaru Fuji” because its shape looks similar to Mount Fuji. Standing at about 1,625 meters, it is the tallest mountain in the region and offers amazing views of the surrounding landscape.

The mountain has been important to local people for centuries, both for its natural beauty and its religious significance. At the base of Mount Iwaki, there is the Iwakiyama Shrine, a sacred place where people pray for good harvests, safety, and happiness. Every year, the Iwaki Mountain Festival takes place, where people carry a portable shrine up the mountain to show their respect.

Hiking is popular at Mount Iwaki, with trails leading to the summit where hikers can enjoy a panoramic view of Aomori’s countryside and even see the Sea of Japan on clear days. In winter, the mountain is covered in snow and becomes a spot for skiing and snowboarding.

Mount Iwaki is also known for its connection to local culture, appearing in folk songs and traditions.

Traveler reviews

Take the road to the gondola. It's 700 yen to the start of a steep rock scramble. However, people of all ages were making the trip so as not to be hard with breaks. You can hike from the parking lot for those looking for a challenge. The staff was nice and even had good English. the view from the peak is priceless. worth the trip.

We did a semi circular route around the volcanic mountain Iwaki and the view is beautiful. Nested amongst the apple tree orchard and some paddy field and forest. The different angle gave a different look. Please don’t compare to Mt Fuji which is iconic. L
Fantastic view on top! Helpful to climb with two hiking poles. Bring water along.
One of the best places to visit in Japan. Make sure you are fit to hike all the way to the top. Bring plenty water and some snacks. Dark Chocolate for altitude sickness. Love this place.
Nice hike! Definitely bring gloves for climbing as it's very rocky. The view is great
