Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Fukuoka Castle Ruins, located in the heart of Fukuoka city, stand as the remains of one of Kyushu's largest castles, constructed between 1601 and 1607 by the feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa. The castle once served as the seat of power for the Kuroda clan, who ruled the Fukuoka Domain for over 270 years during the Edo period. While the original castle structures were largely dismantled during the Meiji Restoration, the extensive stone walls, moats, and several turrets have been preserved, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's feudal past.

The ruins encompass approximately 47 acres within what is now Maizuru Park, creating an important historical site that blends seamlessly with the city's modern landscape. The remaining Tamon Turret and Shiomi Turret are among the few original structures still standing, while the massive stone ramparts showcase the impressive construction techniques of the early 17th century. The site holds particular cultural significance as a nationally designated historic site, representing the architectural and military strategies of the early Edo period.

Visitors can explore the castle grounds by walking along the preserved stone walls and climbing to the former main keep area, which offers panoramic views of Fukuoka city and Hakata Bay. The park is especially renowned during cherry blossom season when over 1,000 sakura trees create a spectacular pink canopy across the hillsides, making it one of Fukuoka's premier hanami spots. Throughout the year, informational signboards in Japanese and English guide visitors through the castle's layout and history. The adjacent Fukuoka Castle Ruins Museum displays artifacts excavated from the site and provides detailed historical context about the Kuroda clan and castle construction.

The ruins are located within easy reach of central Fukuoka, accessible via Ohori-koen Station on the Kuko subway line, just a 5-minute walk from the castle entrance. Alternatively, Akasaka Station on the same line is about 8 minutes on foot. Entry to the castle ruins and Maizuru Park is free of charge, though the museum requires a small admission fee of around 200 yen for adults. The site's central location makes it convenient to combine with visits to nearby attractions such as Ohori Park and the Fukuoka Art Museum.
