Hoppy Street, Taito

4.3 (86)Tourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Hoppy Street (also known as Hoppy Dori or Nikomi Dori) is a historic dining street located in Tokyo's Asakusa district, renowned for its authentic post-war atmosphere and traditional izakaya culture. The street traces its origins to a post-war black market where a unique drinking culture centered around Hoppy began to flourish. Established in the 1980s as Japan's economy grew, the street maintained its retro Showa-era charm while becoming increasingly popular among younger generations and foreign tourists, particularly since the 2000s.

The street's name derives from Hoppy, a low-alcohol carbonated drink (containing less than 0.8% ABV) made from malted barley, hops, and water. Developed as a low-cost alternative to beer during the post-war period, Hoppy is typically mixed with shochu to create an affordable beverage that became deeply ingrained in local culture. This drink remains a signature offering at the street's numerous izakayas, providing visitors with a nostalgic taste of old Tokyo.

Hoppy Street offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Japanese pub culture through its concentration of small, old-style izakayas serving classic comfort food. Notable establishments include Shochan, founded in 1951, which is famous for its gyu-nikomi (stewed beef) made by continuously adding to the same pot of broth since the shop's inception.

The street specializes in nikomi stews, yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), motsuyaki (grilled pork innards), and monjayaki, all designed to pair with Hoppy drinks. The atmosphere is particularly vibrant during evening hours when the street fills with both locals and tourists enjoying alfresco dining at simple tables under lantern-lit conditions.

The street is conveniently located near Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple, and is just steps from the popular Nakamise Shopping Street. Visitors can reach Hoppy Street via a short walk from Asakusa Station, which is served by the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and the Toei Asakusa Line. There is no admission fee to visit the street itself, though individual establishments typically charge a service fee of approximately 300 yen per person.

it's a nice nightlife atmosphere, but don't expect good quality foods or service. The majority were targeting tourists, there is a min service charge 300 yen per person and kick you out when you finish your drink unless you order more. fun to visit just once. one big plus is that there is a big temple nearby, super nice to walk at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, especially on weekends and evenings. Since many izakayas are small, finding a seat can be challenging. Visiting early (around 4–5 PM) on weekdays increases the chance of getting a good spot.

While not kid-friendly, some izakayas may allow families with children, especially earlier in the evening. However, since it is mainly a drinking area, it’s better suited for adults.

Vegetarian options are limited, as most izakayas focus on grilled meat dishes. However, you may find edamame, pickled vegetables, tofu dishes, and salads. It’s best to check with each pub.

Hoppy Street is close to Sensoji Temple, Nakamise Shopping Street, and Asakusa’s Sumida River area. After enjoying food and drinks, you can explore Tokyo Skytree or take a river cruise for a full Asakusa experience.

Hoppy Street is a very lively eating and shopping area located in Tokyo. There were many bars, restaurants and eateries with indoor and outdoor seating. It was a popular spot for tourists but locals were also there too. I enjoyed people watching and taking in the lively atmosphere. I would recommended coming to visit here!

Pretty much just a tourist trap, walking down here at night will see you shouted at by various touts, with far more affordable / genuine izakayas available elsewhere. If you're here at night, I'd recommend walking through senso-ji instead.
