Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center, Oda

The Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center serves as the primary gateway to understanding one of Japan's most significant historical mining sites. The mine was discovered and developed in 1526 by Kamiya Jutei, a Japanese merchant, and operated for nearly 400 years until 1923. During the sixteenth century, it was one of the largest silver mines in Japan, and one third of all the silver in circulation at that time was said to have come from this mine. The mines, mining structures, and surrounding cultural landscape — listed as the "Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and its Cultural Landscape" — became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

The World Heritage Center functions as an essential introductory museum that provides comprehensive historical context before visitors explore the actual mining areas. Located just outside the World Heritage zone, the center houses a museum that provides a comprehensive introduction to the history of the mine. This museum features exhibits and simple dioramas that clearly provide an overall perspective about Iwami Ginzan to the visitors. The facility showcases mining technology, the daily lives of miners and their families during the Edo period, and the global significance of Iwami silver in 16th-century world trade.

Visitors can participate in interactive experiences that bring the mining heritage to life. A fun short play by museum staff introducing the life of miner families in the Iwami Ginzan in the Edo period is held from time to time. Visitors can join workshop of making Chogin, one of the silver coins used during 16th to 19th century in Japan, using an alloy of tin and bismuth (advance reservation required for workshops). The center's exhibits use immersive displays and educational materials to help visitors understand the historical and cultural context before exploring the Omori district with its preserved Edo-period samurai residences and merchant houses, or the actual mining shafts in the Ginzan district.

Transportation to the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center requires multiple connections but follows a straightforward route. Trains run from Matsue and Izumo stations to Odashi Station. The most common route to the site is from Odashi Station on the main Sanin Line, 25 minutes away by bus. You can take a bus here from Oda City station. The center charges admission fees, though specific pricing varies. Parking is extremely limited for private vehicles, making public transportation the recommended option for most visitors.
