Tamawakasu-mikoto Shrine is one of the more well-known shrines in Dogo. On an ordinary day, the shrine is quiet, so you can take your time to appreciate it. There’s a very large tree inside the shrine (30m tall) known as the “Yao-sugi Japanese Cedar Tree”, said to be over 1000 years old, which isn’t something you see every day.
On occasion, festivals are held at the Shrine, such as Goree-furyū which is one of the three largest festivals held on the island of Dogo. During this festival, 8 horses are run from the shrine’s entrance through to the shrine itself, with deities on their back.
A shrine of major importance and on its ground is a really old tree, now heavily supported on its sides.
