Joeiji Temple Sesshu Garden

Joeiji Temple Sesshu Garden is a Zen Buddhist temple located in Yamaguchi City, renowned for possessing one of Japan's most significant karesansui (dry landscape) gardens. The garden was designed by Sesshu Toyo (1420-1506), one of Japan's most celebrated ink painting masters and garden designers, during the Muromachi period. Sesshu, after studying Zen Buddhism and Chinese ink painting techniques in Ming Dynasty China, created this masterpiece garden around 1455 when he returned to serve at Joeiji Temple.

The garden exemplifies Zen aesthetics and represents the pinnacle of Japanese dry landscape design. Created using only rocks, gravel, and carefully pruned vegetation, the garden employs borrowed scenery techniques that incorporate the surrounding mountains into its composition. The arrangement features a central stone grouping symbolizing Mount Horai, the mythical Daoist mountain of immortality, with raked white gravel representing the ocean. The garden's design demonstrates Sesshu's mastery of spatial composition, influenced by his background in sumi-e (ink wash painting), translating three-dimensional landscape painting principles into physical space.

Visitors experience the garden from the temple's veranda, where the designed viewing perspective reveals the garden's full artistic intent. The contemplative space allows observation of how natural light transforms the garden throughout the day and seasons. The temple grounds also include several historic buildings and a small museum displaying artifacts related to Sesshu's life and work. Walking through the temple precincts provides insight into the austere aesthetic principles central to Zen practice.

Joeiji Temple is located approximately 3 kilometers northeast of Yamaguchi Station. Visitors can reach the temple by taking a local bus from Yamaguchi Station toward Ogori, alighting at the Joeiji-mae stop, which requires about 15 minutes. Alternatively, a taxi from the station takes roughly 10 minutes. Admission to the temple and garden costs ¥300 for adults.
