Kamegaoka Archaeological Site

The Kamegaoka Archaeological Site in Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture, preserves one of Japan's most significant Jomon period settlements, dating from approximately 5,500 to 3,000 years ago during the Late and Final Jomon periods. This UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 2021 as part of the "Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan," offers crucial insights into the sophisticated culture of Japan's prehistoric hunter-gatherer communities who thrived in this region for millennia.

The site gained international recognition for its exceptional pottery artifacts, particularly the famous shako-dogu clay figurine with exaggerated "snow goggle" eyes, which has become an iconic symbol of Jomon artistry. Excavations have revealed elaborate lacquerware, ceremonial stone circles, and intricate flame-style pottery that demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship and spiritual complexity of Jomon society. The settlement's location near abundant natural resources, including salmon runs and chestnut forests, supported one of the longest continuously inhabited prehistoric communities in the Japanese archipelago.

Visitors can explore the Tsugaru City Jomon Dwelling Display Facility adjacent to the archaeological site, which houses a comprehensive collection of excavated artifacts including pottery, tools, and ornaments. The museum features reconstructed pit dwellings that illustrate daily life during the Jomon period, while interpretive displays explain the site's archaeological significance and its relationship to other Jomon settlements across northern Japan. Guided walking paths through the excavation area allow visitors to see where ancient inhabitants once lived and worked.

The Kamegaoka site is located approximately 30 kilometers west of JR Goshogawara Station. Visitors can reach the area by taking the JR Gono Line to Kizukuri Station, then a 15-minute taxi ride or local bus to the site. From Aomori City, the journey takes roughly 90 minutes by car via Route 101. Admission to the museum and site is 410 yen for adults, with reduced rates for students and children. Free parking is available on-site for those traveling by private vehicle.
