Kanazawa Zoo, located in the Kanazawa Ward of Yokohama, opened in 1982 and has established itself as one of Japan's most accessible urban wildlife parks. The zoo sits on approximately 99,000 square meters of hilly terrain, offering visitors a naturalistic setting where they can observe animals in spacious, well-designed habitats that prioritize animal welfare and conservation education.

The zoo houses over 700 animals representing approximately 100 species from around the world, with particular emphasis on endangered species and animals native to Asia. Notable residents include Indian elephants, Sumatran tigers, black rhinoceros, and Japanese serow. The facility gained recognition for its breeding programs, particularly its success with endangered species such as the Humboldt penguin and various primate species. The zoo's commitment to conservation extends beyond captive breeding, as it participates in international species preservation efforts and educational programs that raise awareness about wildlife protection.

Visitors can explore several themed zones that replicate natural habitats, including the savanna area where giraffes and zebras roam, and the Australian zone featuring kangaroos and koalas. The petting zoo allows children to interact with domestic animals, while the bird aviary provides an immersive experience with free-flying species. Walking paths wind through the hilly landscape, offering scenic viewpoints across Yokohama Bay. The zoo requires approximately two to three hours for a complete visit, though families with children often spend longer at interactive areas.

Kanazawa Zoo is accessible via the Keikyu Line to Kanazawa-Bunko Station, followed by a 12-minute bus ride on routes bound for the zoo. Alternatively, visitors can take the Seaside Line to Yawata Station and transfer to a bus. Admission costs ¥500 for adults and ¥200 for high school students, while elementary and junior high school students from Yokohama enter free. The zoo provides parking facilities for those traveling by car, with fees of ¥600 per day for standard vehicles.

What other travelers are saying about Kanazawa Zoo

For ¥500 plus about ¥600 for parking it’s difficult not to rate this zoo as a five star. There’s a shuttle that will take you up the hill if you choose to park in the lower parking garage. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance. Lots of animals to see and kids love it. It’s a bit hilly so be prepared to walk up and down hills. The restaurant is okay… reasonably priced and quality of food is meager. It gets busy and difficult to find a table. In all, I highly recommend Kanazawa Zoological Gardens.

Nice place. Quite a few hills to climb, and it's already near the top of a big hill, great views between animals. Animals seem happy enough, if a little lonely. Easy to get a good view of most of them. Plenty of toilets, well spaced and placed around. Good spaces for stopping for a picnic, bring your own or buy on site. Sculptures and art works are also shared, some are fun others very life like. Beware the bus back down to the railway station doesn't run for an hour around midday 😯😳

Awesome spot to spend a whole day with kids and family. Opens at 9:30 am and closes at 4:30 pm but the parking closes at 5:00. Ample parking space @ 600 yen for one time but need to pay while entering . One parking is close to the zoo main entrance and other little far away but they have shuttle bus run in every 10 minutes intervals. As the zoo section is located on the top of the hill bus ride is better idea. Zoo entrance fee is 500yen/adult and 200 yen/child the age of 4 and above. On Saturdays entrance fee free for less than Jr High students. This zoo has the biggest elephant in japan also with ivory. And the first Okapi ( cross breed of giraffe and zebra ) was brought in this zoo in whole Japan. Kangaroo and koala zone is in separate area. Many grey kangaroo on one place. Fortunately we could see kangaroo fight. The best attraction for kids is the playing park with long and stiff slide. It's better is to take Flexible Flyer snow seat sled , as it was a burning feeling while riding on the slide with kids. Many animals preserved. There are good toilet facility. Other additional facilities for having lunch with hot water provision , most of the water taps has hand soap placed.

This is a beautiful place to take in.... you enter to a wonderful place to take a picture complete with the date. The stroll to the different animals is lined with beautiful trees and flowers. 🎋🎍🌸🌷Most of the animals were quite active while we were there 🦒🐏🐐🐘🦏🦛🐨🐓🦘and my granddaughter especially loved the monkey! 🐒 A petting area also for the kids as well as an area to have a picnic and for the kids to play! Also plenty of restrooms throughout.

I commend this Zoo and its Zookeepers because even though there are not much people who always comes here, and its not as popular as Zooraisia, the animals here are very healthy and looks very well taken care of. 👍👍👍 Me and my kids have been to alot of Zoos but here in Kanazawa Zoo we noticed that the animals lives comfortably in their enclosures. some animals are alone but they don't seem lonely at all, it just means that their zookeepers does their job well in taking care of them. 👍👍 i hope everyone comes and visit the healthy animals here in Kanazawa Zoo! 🫶🫶👋👋 Parking: 600¥ Entrance Fee: Adult: 500¥ Highschool: 300¥ Elementary: 200¥ Come and look at the cute Koala Bears and the very healthy Elephants! 😍
