Kitagawa Village “Monet’s Garden” Marmottan

4.3 (2624)GardenTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Kitagawa Village "Monet's Garden" Marmottan is the world's only facility authorized by the Claude Monet Foundation to use the name "Monet's Garden" outside of France. Located in Kitagawa Village, Kochi Prefecture, Japan, this garden recreates the beloved garden that French Impressionist artist Claude Monet created in Giverny, where he spent the latter half of his life painting some of his most iconic works. The garden holds particular cultural significance as it reflects Monet's deep fascination with Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints from the Edo period, demonstrating the cross-cultural artistic exchange between Japan and European Impressionism.

The garden spans approximately 30,000 square meters and features around 70,000 to 100,000 plants divided into three distinct sections. The Water Garden (Mizu no Niwa) showcases an identical taiko bridge to the one Monet built in Giverny in 1883, along with willows, bamboo, wisteria trellises, and ponds featuring water lilies. The Flower Garden (Hana no Niwa) displays seasonal blooms arranged to evoke an artist's palette, with particularly stunning displays in May when roses and nasturtiums are in full bloom. The Garden of Bordighera, reopened in 2020, recreates Mediterranean landscapes inspired by Monet's expedition to the Mediterranean Sea at age 43 with fellow artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, featuring palm trees, olive trees, and exotic plants set against views of mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Visitors can explore replicas of Monet's masterpieces displayed throughout the gardens, including his famous "Water Lilies" series positioned around the ponds. The on-site gallery features a gift shop with Monet souvenirs and local Kitagawa products, while Monet's House restaurant and bakery serve dishes made with local ingredients overlooking the Flower Garden. Morning visits are recommended as water lilies and many flowers close in the afternoon.

The garden is accessible by public transport from Nahari Station on the Tosa Kuroshio Railway, with a 10-minute ride on the Kitagawa Municipal Bus to the Monet no Niwa stop. The bus fare is 230 yen one way. By car, the garden is approximately 70 minutes from the Nankoku Interchange, 90 minutes from JR Kochi Station, or 60 minutes from Kochi Ryoma Airport, with 100 free parking spaces available. Admission costs ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for elementary and middle school students, with children under elementary school age entering free.

What other travelers are saying about Kitagawa Village “Monet’s Garden” Marmottan

Such a pretty place split into different garden areas. Our favourites were the Flower Garden which was in full bloom with tons of butterflies and bees, and the Lily Pond full of flowering blue, pink and yellow lilies which also had masses of butterflies and beautiful blue dragon flies. There is also a gallery, gift shop and cafe, all of which are worth a visit. If you like gardens or are interested in Claude Monet's life and art works, you must not miss this!

Beautiful garden with a large pond. Nature at its best with more frogs, reptiles and insects going about than you could count. It's pretty diverse with a pond section, flower section, Mediterranean section and a forest trail leading to a viewpoint. Would certainly visit again.

A beautiful garden with a variety of photo opportunities. I went on a Friday afternoon, and it was not too crowded. I also got a Ryoma Passport stamp.

I agree with those who say: it’s going to depend on the season you go. I went on March 20th, 2023. The Monet garden… didn’t really look like the pictures. All of the water lilies were gone or dead (most likely because of winter, not extermination). The bridge is nice enough, but it is a *metal* replica and doesn’t quite match what I imagined. As the Monet garden is THE sales point for this place, it felt like a let down. Summer is probably great though. The floral garden is lovely. There were plenty of blooms. That said, I live in Mie prefecture, and there are at least two gardens here which have much vaster floral displays for comparable prices, Nabana no Sato and Red Hills Hisa. The flowers here in Kitagawa were nice but the garden was fairly small in comparison. The Mediterranean area is interesting and clearly much effort was put into making it, but again not much was blooming. A couple minor negative points: there are a few places where there clearly used to be something, and they just gave up. “No entry” signs and whatever was there is starting to be engulfed by forest/weeds. Also, there are signs for a long hike to “Wind Hill”. It is all uphill and basically just a standard “lookout point” over the city. Nothing there of interest at all. If you like lookout points (they’re everywhere in Japan) go for it. Otherwise, wind hill can be skipped and you won’t miss anything but time. Price is reasonable at ¥1000. On the other hand, this garden was listed in a book of “1000 wonderful Japanese views” and I wouldn’t put it that high. Nice enough if you’re in the area, I wouldn’t make a special trip.
