Minokoshi Coast, Tosashimizu

Minokoshi Coast is a remote geological wonder located within Tatsukushi Marine Park in Tosashimizu, Kochi Prefecture. The name Minokoshi translates to "left unseen," referring to a legend that the famous monk Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai) was unable to visit this coast during his pilgrimage through Shikoku in the 790s due to its inaccessibility. The area forms part of Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park and was designated as Japan's first marine park in 1970.

The coast features extraordinary honeycomb rock formations carved from sandstone over millennia by wind and sea erosion. These geological structures were formed from sedimentary layers dating back 15 to 20 million years ago through seismic activity and have been continuously sculpted by the warm Kuroshio Current. The porous, lacy appearance of the rocks creates a surreal landscape that resembles natural sculpture, with numerous folds, crevices, and erosion holes. Visitors can observe trace fossils and nodules containing preserved ammonites embedded in the rock surfaces.

The primary experience at Minokoshi Coast involves a glass-bottom boat tour departing from Tatsukushi Port. The boat journey takes approximately 20 minutes each way, passing over one of Japan's largest Pavona coral colonies, where visitors can observe table corals, plate corals, and tropical fish including butterflyfish, damselfish, and wrasses through the glass floor. Upon arrival at Minokoshi Coast, passengers disembark for a self-guided walk lasting 30 to 70 minutes depending on pace. Walking trails wind through the rock formations, allowing close examination of the weathered sandstone features. The boat then returns passengers to Tatsukushi Port in approximately 10 minutes.

To reach Tatsukushi, take a JR limited express train from Kochi Station to Nakamura Station (approximately 1 hour 40-50 minutes). From Nakamura, board a Kochi Seinan Kotsu bus toward Ashizuri-Misaki and alight at Tatsukushi Kaiteikan-mae bus stop (approximately 1 hour). Alternatively, from Shimantocho-Chuo IC, the drive takes approximately 1 hour 40 minutes by car. Free parking is available at the facility, though spaces are limited during peak seasons. The departure point is at Tatsukushi Kanko Kisen located at 19-10 Tatsukushi, Tosashimizu City. The coast has minimal facilities, so visitors should plan accordingly and bring necessary provisions.
