Kuju Flower Park, Taketa

Kuju Flower Park is situated on the Hisazumi Plateau within Aso-Kuju National Park at an altitude of 850 meters, covering a vast 225,000 square meters. Located at the southern base of the Kuju Mountains, approximately 15 kilometers east of Kurokawa Onsen, this expansive botanical attraction showcases the natural beauty of central Kyushu's highland landscape.

The park represents one of Japan's premier flower destinations, featuring more than 500 different varieties of flowers with 5 million blooms displayed throughout the operational season. The 220,000-square-meter site is organized into specialized themed areas including the Four Seasons Flower Garden, Rose Garden, Hisazumi Garden, Clematis Garden, and Lavender Hill. Seasonal highlights include tulips and poppies in spring, lavender displays in summer, and cosmos fields in autumn.

Visitors experience panoramic views of the majestic Kuju mountain range serving as a dramatic backdrop to the colorful flower displays. The park operates from March through November, designed as a complete "village of flowers" with integrated eateries and shopping facilities. Additional amenities include the Hana to Hoshi camping resort featuring yurt-style accommodations and stargazing opportunities, taking advantage of the plateau's clear night skies away from urban light pollution.

Access to Kuju Flower Park requires careful planning as public transportation options are limited. The nearest railway station is Bungo-Taketa Station, from which a direct taxi ride takes approximately 30 minutes and costs around 6,000 yen one way. A more economical approach involves taking a bus from Bungo-Taketa Station to Kuju-machi (510 yen, 25 minutes), followed by a taxi to the park (approximately 2,000 yen). Private vehicle access is recommended, with 300 parking spaces available including 13 spaces for buses.

Admission fees vary seasonally, ranging from 500-1,300 yen for adults (high school age and older) and free to 500 yen for children (5 years and older). Group discounts apply for parties of 15 or more visitors, and the park remains closed from December 1 through the end of February.
