Kurobe Dam, Tateyama

4.6 (12009)Tourist AttractionScenic SpotPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Kurobe Dam, located in Toyama Prefecture in the Japanese Alps, stands as Japan's tallest dam at 186 meters and remains one of the country's most impressive engineering achievements. Construction began in 1956 and took seven years to complete, during which 171 workers lost their lives due to the extreme conditions of building in such a remote, mountainous location. The project required drilling through the Tateyama mountain range and overcoming numerous geological challenges, making it a monumental undertaking in post-war Japan. The dam was completed in 1963 and primarily serves hydroelectric power generation, providing electricity to the Kansai region.

The dam holds significant cultural importance as a symbol of Japanese determination and engineering prowess during the nation's rapid modernization period. The reservoir it created, Lake Kurobe, stores approximately 200 million cubic meters of water and sits at an elevation of about 1,470 meters above sea level. The surrounding area is part of the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park, offering dramatic alpine scenery with steep valleys and peaks reaching over 3,000 meters. The engineering marvel has been documented in films and books, cementing its place in Japanese industrial heritage.

Visitors to Kurobe Dam can experience the dramatic water discharge that occurs from late June through mid-October, when over 10 tons of water per second cascades down the dam face, often creating rainbows in the spray. The dam features an observation deck accessible by a 220-step staircase, providing panoramic views of the surrounding Northern Alps. A walking path along the dam crest allows visitors to cross the 492-meter length of the structure, and sightseeing boats operate on Lake Kurobe during the warmer months, offering a different perspective of the reservoir and mountains.

Access to Kurobe Dam requires taking the Kanden Tunnel Trolleybus from Ogizawa Station, which travels through the mountain for approximately 15 minutes. The dam can also be reached from the Tateyama side via the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, though this involves multiple transportation connections including cable cars and ropeways. Admission to the dam observation areas is free, though transportation costs on the Alpine Route or from Ogizawa are separate. The area is popular during autumn foliage season in October and during the peak water discharge period in summer.

What other travelers are saying about Kurobe Dam, Tateyama

An impressive feat of engineering. They give you around 16 min to transfer from the Kanden electric bus to the cable car. Walking from the bus across the dam takes around 10 min at a brisk pace. However you might want to slow down and look around, it's beautiful. We however opted to slow down for the return journey to maximise up in Murodo. On the way back, there is a 40 min gap between the cable car and bus transfer back in the afternoon so time to enjoy the dam then.

Absolutely magnificent! 🍂 Visiting Kurobe Dam in October was unforgettable, the earthy autumn colors, the rainbow terrace, and the scenic views all along the route were stunning. Also as always, Japan is so thoughtful in accommodating tourists, combining the nature and how they made it easy for all people to hike, even though it’s a short uphill hike from the station to the top, the views make it more than worth it. Every step of the trip was memorable, with breathtaking scenery everywhere ✨✨✨

From Murodo I took the tunnel electric bus, ropeway and cable car to arrive at the Kurobe dam at 12:06 pm. It’s a beautiful sunny day in September. The views are impressive.

It is a beautiful and magnificent as it can be! It was built at 61 years ago according to our. Tours guide. And 171 people were lost during the construction! The lights rain on the day of our visit did not affect its beauty. The dam and the lake really made this place magical! All four seasons will give this place a different and unique face, so it is worth of coming back sometime! We also saw a performance in front of gift shot even is raining! What a fantastic performance!
