Kyukamura Nyuto Onsenkyo, Senboku

Kyukamura Nyuto Onsenkyo is a modern hot spring resort located within the historic Nyuto Onsen Village, one of seven hot spring inns situated at an altitude between 600 and 800 meters in the foothills of Mount Nyuto in Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Senboku City, Akita Prefecture. The Nyuto Onsenkyo area has more than 350 years of history, dating back to when the lords of Akita visited the inns seeking recovery from travel or battle. Nyuto Onsenkyo was designated as a National Recreational Onsen Resort in 1967 by Japan's Ministry of the Environment.

Kyukamura Nyuto Onsenkyo stands out as the most modern facility among the seven inns and was originally built by the government to promote health and tourism. The resort is distinguished by its two different natural hot spring sources: the reddish-brown Nyuto no Yu, a sodium bicarbonate spring known for its healing effects on cuts and burns, and the milky-white Tazawako Kogen no Yu, a sulfur spring effective for high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis. The open-air baths, surrounded by a forest of beech trees, offer views of scenery that changes with the seasons, with spring and summer bringing lush greenery and autumn displaying vibrant foliage from mid-October to mid-November.

The resort offers both Western and Japanese-style rooms and serves dinner and breakfast buffets featuring local Akita ingredients. Guests staying at any of the seven Nyuto Onsenkyo inns can purchase the Yumeguricho (Hot Spring Hopping Passport) for 2,500 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for children, which allows access to all seven hot spring facilities within a one-year validity period. The Yumeguricho also provides access to the Yumegurigo shuttle bus that circulates within Nyuto Onsenkyo.

Day-trip bathing is available for 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children. To reach Kyukamura Nyuto Onsenkyo, take the JR Komachi Shinkansen bound for Akita from Tokyo to Tazawako Station, then board the Ugokotsu bus bound for Nyuto Onsen for 45 minutes, disembarking at Kyukamura-mae bus stop. The resort is located 48 miles from Akita Airport, with nearby attractions including Lake Tazawa at 14 miles and Kakunodate Station at 24 miles.
