Lake Akan Observatory, Kushiro

Lake Akan Observatory is strategically positioned south of the hot spring resort along the shores of Lake Akan in Hokkaido's Akan-Mashu National Park. The caldera lake itself was formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 150,000 years ago and sits 420 meters above sea level, surrounded by pristine virgin forests. The lake is renowned for housing marimo, rare spherical green algae designated as a special natural treasure of Japan.

The observatory serves dual purposes throughout the year, functioning as a ski resort during winter months while providing unobstructed panoramic viewing opportunities during the warmer seasons. Visitors can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Akan with Mount Oakan and Mount Meakan prominently displayed directly ahead. The nearby Sokodai Observatory offers additional vantage points for viewing Mount Oakan, Lake Panketo, and Lake Penketo.

The primary visitor experience centers on scenic observation and photography opportunities. Lake cruises operate hourly with 1.5-hour excursions that navigate close to the shoreline near the volcanic mountains before crossing to smaller areas of the lake. The observatory provides an ideal base for exploring the broader Akan-Mashu National Park, which encompasses three iconic lakes connected by scenic driving routes.

During summer months, the observatory is easily accessible by car, though rental car usage is strongly recommended throughout the region due to infrequent and inconvenient public transportation. The park can be reached within 1-2 hours by car from major regional centers including Kushiro, Abashiri, or Bihoro.

Lake Akan is located approximately one hour's drive from Tancho Kushiro International Airport. Car rental facilities are available at regional airports and in Kushiro. Public bus services operate on limited schedules, with Akan Bus providing transit service via the "Tsurui Line" with six daily departures (five on weekends) from Kushiro Station. Access to the observatory viewing areas is typically free of charge, though specific cruise operations and seasonal activities may require separate admission fees.
