Makkari Onsen

4.1 (935)HotelLodgingPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Makkari Onsen is a natural hot spring resort located in Makkari Village in Hokkaido's Abuta District, offering visitors an authentic Japanese bathing experience with spectacular mountain views. This all-natural sourced gensen kakenagashi hot spring features stunning views of Mt Yotei from its rotenburo (outdoor bath), making it one of the region's most scenic onsen destinations.

The facility represents traditional Japanese hot spring culture, where visitors can experience the therapeutic benefits of natural mineral-rich waters in a peaceful rural setting. The outdoor bath provides unobstructed views of Mt Yotei, Hokkaido's iconic volcanic peak often called "Ezo Fuji" for its resemblance to Mount Fuji. The indoor facilities complement the outdoor experience with separate male and female bathing pools that maintain traditional onsen customs.

Visitors can enjoy the therapeutic hot spring waters while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding Niseko region's pristine landscape. The onsen follows traditional Japanese bathing etiquette, requiring visitors to bathe without clothing and prohibiting tattoos. Basic amenities including body soap and shampoo are provided, though visitors must purchase towels on-site rather than rent them.

Makkari Onsen is located at 174-3 Midorioka, Makkari Village, Abuta District, Hokkaido, approximately 2.5 hours by car from New Chitose Airport. The facility provides 100 free parking spaces for visitors arriving by car. Public transportation options include taking the JR train to Kutchan Station and transferring to local buses that serve the Niseko area, though car rental provides the most convenient access to this rural location. Adult admission costs vary by season, with a 15-time ticket available for 6,000 yen and children's tickets (ages 6-12) priced at 2,500 yen, while children under 5 enter free. Payment is accepted in cash only.

Onsen itself consist of an indoor and an outdoor. The indoor is freaking hot, presumably about 43 degrees while the outdoor Onsen is like 38-39 degrees. It’s quite remote so it’s only accessible by car. Price is a big plus, costing only 600 for an adult. Locker does not need any coin. Body soap and shampoo is provided. Do bring your own towel. What’s unique is the great view of Mt Yotei from the outdoor.
Stunning outdoor onsen view of Yotei-san. Small onsen pool but worth to come. Only JPY 600. Bring your own towels or add JPY 300
Small, local onsen with views of Mt. Yotei. The onsen has 7 washing stations, a sauna, 1 indoor and 1 outdoor bath. Body soap and rinse in shampoo provided. In the changing rooms there are small lockers. There are larger lockers in the onsen lobby. There is a ramen restaurant on site and tatami mat relaxation area. The views from the outdoor bath are amazing. Entrance ¥600.
It's not great. Just, average. 600¥ entry is high, for what you get and the location. Sure, the view of Yotei during the day is stunning, yet other Onsen around the area offer better facilities and more bathing options. Here you only have 2 baths. Closed Mondays. Normal hours 11am-9pm
