Lake Kanayama, Minamifurano

Lake Kanayama is an artificial reservoir created by the Kanayama Dam, completed in 1967 on the upper reaches of the Sorachi River in Minamifurano, Hokkaido. The dam is notable as the only hollow concrete gravity dam in Hokkaido, featuring a unique hollow interior construction. Built for multiple purposes including flood control, irrigation, water supply, and hydroelectric power generation, the facility produces between 12,000 to 25,000 kilowatts of electricity.

The lake has earned recognition as one of Japan's 100 most beautiful dam lakes, distinguished by its spectacular setting surrounded by vast natural beauty. This narrow reservoir stretches approximately ten kilometers through wooded mountains, creating a picturesque landscape that serves as an excellent stopover for travelers journeying between Sapporo and Furano via back roads.

The lake area offers diverse seasonal activities for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy camping and canoeing during summer months, while winter brings opportunities for wakasagi (smelt) fishing on ice and dog sledding. River rafting is also available as a summer activity. The Kanayama Forest Park on the lake's central northern edge houses the Kanayamakohan Camping Ground and the scenic Lake Kanayama Lavender Fields.

Public transportation to Lake Kanayama requires taking a train from Sapporo Station to Furano Station, a journey of approximately two hours. From Furano Station, visitors board the local Furano Shizuoka line bus toward Minamifurano and disembark at the Kanayama Lake bus stop. Parking facilities are available near the lake for those traveling by car. The nearest major airport is Asahikawa Airport, located 76 kilometers from the area. Entry to the lake area is free of charge, though specific activity fees may apply for camping, canoeing, and other recreational services.
